How the Groups Work

Points System

Win = 3 points  ·  Draw = 1 point  ·  Loss = 0 points. Teams are ranked first by total points, then by goal difference (goals scored minus goals conceded), then by total goals scored.

Who Advances

Top 2 from each of 12 groups = 24 teams advance automatically. The 8 best third-place finishers (selected by points, then goal difference across all groups) round out the 32-team knockout bracket.

Groups Worth Watching

Where the drama has been — and where it still is.

Went the distance
Group G — Egypt & Belgium edge through

The tightest group of all ended with Egypt and Belgium both on five points — Egypt top on goals scored — while Iran drew all three games and still snuck through as a best third-place team. New Zealand were the only side to miss out.

Photo finish
Group L — three from four survive

England topped it on seven points, Croatia recovered from an opening 4–2 loss to England to take second, and Ghana claimed a third-place spot — sending three of the four teams into the last 32. Only Panama went home.

Heavyweight finish
Group C — Brazil & Morocco both on 7

Five-time champions Brazil and a fearless Morocco side drew 1–1 and then both won out, finishing level on seven points — Brazil top only on goal difference. Both are safely through.

Shock of the group stage
Group E — Ecuador stun Germany

Germany topped the group, but Ecuador's 2–1 win on the final day was one of the results of the tournament — and earned Ecuador a place among the best third-place teams. Ivory Coast also advanced.
